PIROXICAM

Dosage form Capsules, 20 mg

Uses Piroxicam is a non-steroidal antiinflammatory agent used in musculoskeletal and joint disorders.

Administration Piroxicam has analgesic, antiinflammatory, and antipyretic properties. It is used in rheumatic disorders such as ankylosing spondylitis, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis in a usual dose by month of 20 mg daily in single or divided doses with a range of 10 to 30 mg daily. In acute musculoskeletal conditions an initial dose of 40 mg daily may be given for 2 days followed by 20 mg daily for 1 to 2 weeks. Piroxicam is also used in acute gout, the usual dose being 40 mg daily for 5 to 7 days.
Piroxicam may also be used in children aged 6 years or over with juvenile chronic arthritis. The usual dose is 5 mg daily in those weighing less than 15 kg, 10 mg daily in those weighing 16 to 25 kg, 15 mg daily in those weighing 26 to 45 kg, and 20 mg daily in those weighing 46 kg or over.

Observe
Adverse Effects: Gastro-intestinal disturbances are the commonest side effects occurring with Piroxicam. Peptic ulceration and gastro-intestinal bleeding have been reported. Other side-effects which have been reported include headache, dizziness, blurred vision, tinnitus, skin rashes and prutitus, and oedema.
Precautions: Piroxicam should not be used in patients with a history of gastro-intestinal haemorrhage or ulcers or Aspirin sensitivity. It should be used with caution in patients with impaired renal function and in patients with cardiovascular disorders where oedema may worsen the condition.
Concomitant administration of Piroxicam and Aspirin has been reported to result in lowered plasma-piroxicam concentrations.

Storage Store in a cool and dry place, away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
