TRIHEXYPHENIDYL HCL (BENZHEXOL)
Dosage form Tablets, 2 mg
Uses
Indications: Parkinsonism (idiopathic, postencephalitic, arteriosclerotic). Control of extra-pyramidal effects induced by drugs (phenothiazines and reserpine). Spastic conditions, muscle rigidity, dyskinesis. Tremor in the aged.
Properties: Trihexyphenidyl HCL is a para-sympatholytic agent which relaxes smooth muscles by directly affecting muscle tissue, and indirectly by its inhibitory effect on the para-sympathetic nervous system.
Trihexyphenidyl HCL is used to control symptoms of Parkinsonism: it prevents rigidity and tremor, reduces the frequency of spastic attacks and improves states of depression in Parkinson patients.
Trihexyphenidyl HCL is effective in controlling extrapyramidal effects, caused by drugs which affect the CNS (reserpine, phenothiazines).
Trihexyphenidyl HCL dimishes salivary secretion, accelerates cardiac rhythm and causes pupil dilatation.
Administration
Dosage: 1-2 mg daily in divided doses. May be increased gradually as necessary, up to 6-10 mg daily in divided doses. Post-encephalitic patients may need very high dosages. Treatment with Trihexyphenidyl HCL should be discontinued by gradual reduction of dosage.
Observe
Side-effects: Nausea, dryness of the mouth, blurring of vision and cerebral stimulation indicate overdosage and disappear upon reduction of dosage.
