GLYCERYL TRINITRATE

Dosage form Tablet, 0.5 mg

Uses Glyceryl trinitrate is used in acute anginal pain. In the long-term management of angina pectoris, and in cardiac emergencies such as unstable angina or myocardial infarction. Tolerance can develop with long-term use.



Administration Glyceryl trinitrate relaxes smooth muscle, including vascular muscle and is used for the prophylaxis and treatment of stable angina. It may sometimes be given intravenously to control the pain of unstable angina. Other indications include congestive heart failure and inducing hypotension during surgery. It may have a role in the management of myocardial infarction.
In the treatment of stable angina glyceryl trinitrate is used to provide rapid relief of the pain of an acute episode as well as to prevent such episodes developing. At the first sign of anginal pain one sublingual tablet (usual strength 300 to 600 mg) is placed under the tongue. The dose may be repeated as required but patients should be advised to seek medical care if pain persists after a total of 3 doses within 15 minutes.



Observe
Adverse Effects: Glyceryl trinitrate may cause flushing of the face, dizziness, tachycardia, and throbbing headache. Large doses cause vomiting, restlessness, hypotension, syncope, and rarely cyanosis. and methaemoglobinaemia; coldness of the skin, impairment of respiration, and bradycardia may ensue.

Storage Store in a cool and dry place in airtight container, away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
